Where did the name, Glassman Clay Studio, come from?
A significant funding commitment from Barbara Glassman enabled the Art League to fully launch the Glassman Clay Studio at Art Place. Additional funding from the Communitiy Foundation, the Arts Council of Henderson County, NC Arts, and the Henderson County Tourism Development Authority enabled us to upgrade power and add equipment to create the fully equipped facility we have today.
Barbara's husband, Stuart, was a respected physician in Hendersonville and an accomplished clay artist. Many in our community appreciated both his skilled care and skill as a clay artist. In addition to being a skilled surgeon, he believed in compassionate care for whomever needed it and spent numerous hours providing services to the Free Clinics and Blue Ridge Community Health Services. In his office, patients who needed care and could not pay were never turned away.
His countless generosity left an indelible mark on those who worked most closely with him. A previous ArtScape banner artist, he found working with clay to be a source of relaxation. the Art League is excited to see his legacy in our community continue bring a source of joy to others as they explore the benefits of working in clay.
